The Adam Project

Movie Review: *The Adam Project* (2022)

Directed by: Shawn Levy

Starring: Ryan Reynolds, Walker Scobell, Mark Ruffalo, Jennifer Garner, Zoe Saldaña, Catherine Keener

Plot Summary:

*The Adam Project* is a sci-fi action-comedy that follows Adam Reed (Ryan Reynolds), a time-traveling fighter pilot from 2050 who crash-lands in 2022. There, he teams up with his 12-year-old self (Walker Scobell) to save the future by preventing the invention of time travel, which has been weaponized by a powerful corporation led by Maya Sorian (Catherine Keener). Along the way, they reconnect with their late father (Mark Ruffalo), adding emotional depth to the adventure.

Strengths:

1. Chemistry & Humor: Reynolds and Scobell have fantastic comedic chemistry, with Scobell impressively mimicking Reynolds' signature sarcastic wit. Their banter is a highlight.

2. Emotional Core: The film balances action with heartfelt moments, particularly in Adam’s unresolved grief over his father’s death. Ruffalo and Garner bring warmth to their roles.

3. Entertaining Action: The visual effects and fight scenes are sleek and fun, with Zoe Saldaña shining in her limited but impactful role.

4. Nostalgic Vibes: The movie pays homage to ’80s Amblin-style adventures (*E.T.*, *Back to the Future*), blending sci-fi, humor, and family themes effectively.

Weaknesses:

1. Predictable Plot: The story follows a familiar time-travel template without many surprises. Some sci-fi logic is hand-waved for convenience.

2. Underused Villain: Catherine Keener’s antagonist feels underdeveloped, lacking depth or real menace.

3. Pacing Issues: The middle section drags slightly before picking up for the emotional finale.

Verdict:

The Adam Project is an enjoyable, if formulaic, sci-fi adventure that succeeds thanks to its charismatic leads, humor, and emotional resonance. While it doesn’t break new ground, it’s a fun, heartfelt ride perfect for a casual watch.

*Rating:* ★★★½ (3.5/5) – A crowd-pleasing mix of action, laughs, and nostalgia.
