Review of *Backstreet Rookie* (2020)

Backstreet Rookie (also known as *Convenience Store Saet-byeol*) is a 2020 South Korean romantic comedy-drama starring Ji Chang-wook (*The K2*, *Healer*) and Kim Yoo-jung (*Love in the Moonlight*, *Clean with Passion for Now*). Based on a popular webtoon, the series blends humor, romance, and slice-of-life moments but faced mixed reactions due to its controversial elements.

Plot Summary

The story revolves around Choi Dae-hyun (Ji Chang-wook), a kind-hearted but somewhat naive convenience store manager, and Jung Saet-byul (Kim Yoo-jung), a bold and free-spirited part-time employee with a hidden tough-girl past. Their relationship begins when a younger Saet-byul (played by Kim Yoo-jung in flashbacks) asks Dae-hyun to buy her cigarettes, leaving a lasting impression. Years later, they reunite when Saet-byul starts working at his store, leading to comedic and romantic developments.

Strengths

1. Chemistry Between Leads – Ji Chang-wook and Kim Yoo-jung deliver charming performances, balancing humor and emotional moments well.

2. Lighthearted Comedy – The show excels in quirky, feel-good humor, especially in the convenience store setting.

3. Supporting Cast – Characters like Dae-hyun’s ex-girlfriend (Han Sun-hwa) and the store’s eccentric customers add fun dynamics.

4. Visual Appeal – Bright, colorful cinematography matches the playful tone.

Controversies & Weaknesses

1. Age Gap Criticism – Despite Kim Yoo-jung being an adult, the flashbacks highlighting her character’s underage crush on Dae-hyun (then in his 20s) sparked discomfort among viewers.

2. Uneven Tone – The drama shifts between comedy, romance, and melodrama, sometimes feeling disjointed.

3. Predictable Plot – Many tropes (love triangles, chaebol conflicts) feel recycled without fresh twists.

Verdict

Backstreet Rookie is an easygoing rom-com with enjoyable moments but suffers from questionable creative choices and a lack of narrative depth. Fans of the leads may find it entertaining, but it’s not a standout in the genre.

Rating: 6.5/10

Recommendation: If you enjoy light, fluffy rom-coms and can overlook its flaws, it’s a casual watch. Otherwise, better K-dramas in a similar vein (*Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-joo*, *Strong Woman Do Bong-soon*) might be more satisfying.
